More than half a century after their triumphant Blennerhassett Trophy win, the Portmagee Valentia Badminton Team reunited recently at the end of August to celebrate not just a victory but also to reflect on a lifetime of friendships, memories, and community spirit.

It was back in 1973 that the team triumphed over Dingle to take home the win, and while much has changed since then and the hair is a little greyer and the limbs are not as nimble as they once were, something that never dimmed is the light of that victory in the minds of all those who took part.

The recent reunion of the team, which took place at the Portmagee Community Centre, a place where they played and practised all those years ago, was hailed as a huge success by Ann Egan, who spoke to The Kerryman about it. She said that it also served as a time to remember the many friendships forged through badminton and the strong sense of community that surrounded the sport at the time.

"It was a mighty get-together. Some of us hadn’t met each other for nearly 20 years. We were chatting about all of the old games that we played and who we played against. The people that we met and we played with in those years, the friendships that we made were so strong in our lives.” ........
